Foothill Horizons Camp
Foothill Horizons Outdoor
School at the Neil Wade Outdoor Education Center, is located just
outside of Sonora, California. The school, located at the base of the
Sierra Nevada Mountains at approximately 2500' elevation, features
143 beautiful acres of woodland with a mixture of oak and Ponderosa pines and a perennial creek.
Foothill Horizons has a large swimming
pool, basketball court, playground and sports equipment, hiking
trails, a museum and an astronomy tower.
Campers stay in small
dormitory rooms that can sleep between 12 and 20 guests. A retreat
building sleeps an additional 12 guests.
A large, air conditioned
dining hall seats up to 250 guests. Nearby the outdoor school is a replica of Mi-Wuk Indian Village that has genuine Native
American grinding stones.
Tuolumne
County, where Foothill Horizons is located, is rich in historical
sites and has abundant opportunties for outdoor recreation. Columbia
State park, a restored 1849 town and the city of Sonora is just a
short drive (5 miles) away. Pinecrest Lake Resort (about a 30 mile
drive) is
nearby and is perfect for a family vacation featuring
camping, cabins, boating, horseback riding and back packing. Yosemite
National Park and the Stanislaus National Forest are also local
attractions.
Directions
If you are driving to Foothill Horizons, locate Sonora, CA on a map
(about 50 miles east of Modesto).
Then,
From
the Bay Area: Take I-580 east to I-205 east. Take Hwy 120 east
(follow signs to Sonora). Follow Hwy 120 through Oakdale. (Hwy 120
turns left onto F street in Oakdale.) Continue east as Hwy 120 joins Hwy
108. Hwy 120 will eventually turn off towards Yosemite; you want
to continue straight east.
From Hwy 108 to Sonora,
exit at Mono Way. Turn left at the exit stoplight on Mono Way. Go
past one light to the next stoplight which is Greenly Road. Turn
right. Continue uphill on Greenly Road thru a
stoplight until the road T’s into Lyons Bald Mtn Road. Turn
right onto Lyons Bald Mtn Road. Foothill Horizons is about 3 miles up, at 21925
Lyons Bald Mtn Road, on the righthand side. The sign at the entrance
says "Neil Wade Outdoor Education Center/Foothill Horizons."
From
Southern California: Take Hwy 99 north to Merced. Exit at the Hwy
59 “Gustine-Sonora” exit. Still on Hwy 59, you will pass
through the small town of Snelling. Watch carefully for signs for
J59 and Sonora. You will turn left onto J59 from Hwy 59. Follow J59 to
Hwy 108/120. Turn right on Hwy 108/120, and follow
the directions printed in italics above.
From
the North: Take Hwy 99 south to Hwy 4 east in Stockton,
(Farmington exit). Follow Hwy 4 through Farmington to
Copperopolis. Turn right at the turnout for Copperopolis on
O’Byrnes Ferry Road. Continue past the Tulloch Reservoir to where
O’Byrnes Ferry Rd ends at Hwy 108/120. Turn left on Hwy
108/120, and follow the directions printed in italics above.
