BACDS American Dance and Music Week — June 28–July 3, 2015 BACDS American Dance and Music Week, June 28–July 3, 2015

Dance & Activity Descriptions

AmWeek camp is chock-full of dancing for dancers and nonstop formal and informal music workshops for musicians, all day and every night. Spend all day dancing, or spend time in intimate small and personal sessions with world-class dance musicians. Or split your time and do both! There's something for everyone, and there's ample time available to rest and contemplate.

Current plans include:

Waltzes Before Breakfast: Start the day floating with The Avant Gardeners and friends in this glorious traditional way to wait for breakfast to be served (check out our waltz music CDs from past years!). Come and dance, or bring your instrument and play lovely waltzes with camp staff and fellow campers in this open band.

Linda's Favorites with Linda Leslie: Linda's picks from her own choreography shared for this dance session. She's a master!

Contra: Elegance & Energy, Poise & Power with Nils Fredland: Explore the subtleties of contra dance sequences with particular attention on cultivating the flexibility to bring all the pieces together — choreography, musicians, caller, and dancers.

Squares From Around the World with Nils Fredland: Squares from Appalachia to New England, from New Zealand to Europe, and everywhere in between and beyond.

Contras From Then and Now with Linda Leslie: Contras with a twist, including Becket favorites and the occasional Triple Minor.

Callers' Workshop with Nils Fredland: From A-Z! The class will address all aspects of calling — it's more than the microphone! Programming, teaching, calling, band communication, and more!

Open Mic Caller's Session with Linda Leslie: Try out calling for the first time, or work on a more hallenging dance or new choreography. Priority will be given to folks who attend the Callers' Workshop.

Couple Dancing with Kelsie Hartman: Mostly Waltz, including leading and following and flourishes, and who knows what other dance forms will come up through the week?

Stretch and Flex with Certified Yoga Instructor Laura Light in the yurt. The multi-level class is suitable for beginners through experienced practitioners, and is safe at to try at any level. And it's at a reasonable hour of the day, not first thing (we’re waltzing then, of course!) Please bring a mat and if possible, a blanket.

Traditional Crafts with Lea Smith. Bring out your creative nature. Make a basket and other fun items. You can try a new craft every day.

Before dinner, share your hidden talents: sing, dance, play, or recite for the entertainment of your fellow camper community during our Round Up gathering at the amphitheatre.

One-day workshops including: The Art of Sound with Marty Brenneis • Continuous Contra Medley with Eric Black • suggest your own session! (for example, in past years we’ve had Techno Contra and Dutch Crossing)

Each evening join the dancing with music and calling by our stellar staff. Dress up, dress down, but be prepared to dance up a storm. And if your wardrobe needs enhancing, browse through The Grand Marché Clothing Boutique for unique items to match your unique character. Or bring your instruments and join in the nightly staff-driven evening music session held in parallel with the dance.

After the evening dance and parallel music session, party into the night at The Perkins Roadhouse, where the entire camp gathers for snacks, more music, dancing, crafting, games and late-night activities together in one room. Enjoy the variety of camper contributions and interplay that makes our dance community so special. Trash English has to be experienced to be understood!

Best memory? … is it calling my 1st contra dance? Or, is it actually tango dancing? Or, is it every night, moving on a floor filled with a community of skilled and talented dancers and unbelievably good music!
