| Fall Weekend Archive - Past Year Pages |
After many years as a mixed English/American dance camp, from 2008 forward Fall Dance Weekend at Monte Toyon will now focus primarily on English Country Dance, Display Dance (morris / sword / clog), music and song. Come to Fall Weekend for a weekend of English country dance with world-class callers and musicians, a full and varied Display dance program, fellowship and fun.
Programmer Sharon Green and a large committee (including former managers Alan Winston and Vanessa Schnatmeier, new manager Victoria Williams, previous treasurer Lise Dyckman, new treasurer Mary Luckhardt, and many more) bring you a weekend of elegant and rowdy dances, skills improvement, and deep pleasure.
Here's a first look at our staff. Please check back here for updates!
East meets West at Monte Toyon as three of the East Coast's top country dance leaders--all three just starred at NEFFA--combine forces with a host of superb Bay Area musicians. Fall Weekend's English country dance leaders are:
Barbara Finney (MA)--Articulate, genial, serene, Barbara is noted for her clear teaching and welcoming presence. A regular Boston Centre teacher, she has led workshops on both coasts and in Canada, and has served as program director for Pinewoods English Week.
Michael Barraclough (UK, now VA) Michael's English country dance career goes back to the 1970s, when he danced with London Folk at the Albert Hall. In addition to having been _the_ Dancing Master working with England's brilliant band Pyewacket, Michael is an able reconstructor of Playford dances. Michael's website
Scott Higgs (PA) --Scott has been composing and teaching English and contra dances for over 25 years, with energy and enthusiasm that continue to grow. From Seattle to Antwerp, dancers praise his engaging programs, dynamic presentation and emphasis on fun. Scott's website
The display dance program is starting to take shape, and it's looking good! Again, East meets West:
Papa Stour Sword Dance
Francis Attanasio (NH)--ECD dancers know Francis as co-editor (with
Helene Cornelius) of the Boston Centre's English Country Dance
Collection. Display dancers, however, know him as a stalwart of the
Pinewoods Morris Men and Cambridge Revels, for which he has taught
the dynamic Papa Stour dance.
At Monte Toyon, Francis will be joined by California's Jon Berger, fiddler extraordinaire.
In addition to Jon, Fall Weekend's extraordinary musical staff includes Noel Cragg (squeezebox, piano), Shira Kammen (violin, voice), Rebecca King (piano), Jim Oakden (you name it, he plays it), Erin Vang (brass), and the incomparable Chuck Ward (piano, accordion). Leading singalongs and singing music hall favorites is that Dickens Fair favorite, Doug Olsen of Oak, Ash & Thorn. [There's no way mere words can capture their music, so we won't even try. Go buy their CDs!]
Stay tuned for updates, as we add musicians and display dance teachers to our staff!
