Saturday, November 3
Out in a deceptively quiet corner of Sunset District of San Francisco, the contra at SF holds forth, tonight features special guest Suzanne Girardot, one of Seattle's best callers, with music by the viviparous--yet somewhat discreet--band The Guppies (Kathrine Gardner, Jim Oakden and Craig Johnson).

Wednesday, November 7
The first Wednesday contra at GNC in Berkeley features Erik Hoffman calling, with music by Open Band led by Jon Pedersen, Mike Drayton, and Perry Fly.

Friday, November 9
The second Friday Berkeley contra at FIN, with Kirston Koths calling, and music by the amazing Swing Farm (Ray Bierl, Charlie Hancock & Steven Strauss).

Saturday, November 10
Down in Palo Alto at PA, the contra has by Jim Saxe calling, and jumping tunes by Swing Farm (Ray Bierl, Charlie Hancock & Steven Strauss).

The monthly San Francisco English dance at BET in the Noe Valley district... Lise Dyckman splits the calling with recent NYC emigré Danny Walkowitz; music united by the trio of David Strong, Robert Hill, and Craig Johnson. The dance starts at 7:30, but for easier parking as well as a delicious meal shared with dancing friends, come join us for dinner at 6pm at a local restaurant a few blocks away--for more details, contact Lise or Ruth at 415/430-1269 x3293.

Sunday, November 11
COUPLE DANCE WORKSHOP! Erik Hoffman leads one of his acclaimed couple dance workshops at ECV, teaching Schottish, Waltz, and Norwegian Polka for as many as will. Music by the versatile and virtuosic fiddler Bobbi Nikles. 4-5:30. Special admission: $7 admission (BACDS/affiliate members $6), and there's also a $1 discount for dancers attending both workshop and evening dance.

& The aforementioned evening dance, of course, is the 2nd Sunday Square and Contra dance in El Cerrito at ECV. Erik Hoffman calling, with music by Vista Strings (Bobbi and Roland Nikles, Daren Santos and friends).

Wednesday, November 14
Every Wednesday there's community dancing in Berkeley at GNC; tonight it's English with Ric Goldman calling, and music by David Strong, Judy Linsenberg, and Chuck Ward.

Friday, November 16
The Palo Alto English dance at MT features special guest caller Odette Foster (from Juneau), and music by Nonesuch Country Dance Players (Ruth Anne Fraley, Susan and Stanley Kramer, Mark Daly and Paul Kostka) .

Saturday, November 17
Come for a day of English dance at the Fall Ball! It all takes place in San Mateo at SMT. First up is a workshop to review the dances, with Lydee Scudder leading the dance (and going over the finer points thereof), music provided by Stan Kramer and Craig Johnson. Starting at 2:30 pm. Price is included in the Fall Ball admission; see below.

The BACDS Fall Ball in San Mateo at SMT. Jody McGeen has chosen the dances--in celebration of the 350th anniversary of the first edition of John Playford's Dancing Master--and will call them for the evening. Wonderful music by Chuck Ward, Jon Berger, Avis Minger, and Dan Reynolds. There will be singing at 7:30, and the dance starts at 8:00. $18 advance/$22 at the door (this price includes both workshop and ball). For more information: HIvatt@SelectQuote.com, http://go.to/fallball, or (510) 814-6947.

Or for those who prefer contra, there's a fine trio of Bostonians featured at the San Francisco dance at (wait for it...) SF. Sue Rosen calling, with music by Bruce Rosen and Lissa Schneckenburger.

Wednesday, November 21
3rd Wednesday contra at Berkeley's GNC. The marvelous Mavis McGaugh calls, to music by Open Band led by Bobbi Nikles, Charlie Hancock, and Kyle Thayer (also known as "That wonderful band on cut #10 of Swinging On The Gate"). Cast off calories as you kick off this years Thanksgiving Holiday!

Friday, November 23
The San Francisco contra at SF features genial series host Charlie Fenton calling with music by those purveyors of fine Irish music Tipsy House (Jack Gilder, Chris Knepper and Junji Shirota).

Saturday, November 24
The tradition continues: the Post-Thanksgiving potluck (desserts, yes, turkey, no!) at the Palo Alto contra at PA. Eric Black is your caller, Tipsy House (Jack Gilder, Chris Knepper and Junji Shirota) is the band. Lucky you!

Perhaps that icon's misleading... Ever wondered what American-style contra's equivalent in the UK is? If so, you should check out English ceidhli dancing, and that's the program for the fourth Saturday dance at GNC. For once, this is not an experienced dancers' dance--all levels are welcome, from lots to none. Alan Winston calls with music by Jon Berger & Co.

Sunday, November 25
& The fourth Sunday Square and Contra dance at 7pm in El Cerrito (at ECV). David Newitt will call, with music by Open Band led by Stump Tail Dog (Dan Engle & Ray Frank). Whew...

Wednesday, November 28
Do you get the idea that David Newitt is versatile? Squares and contras on Sunday, English country tonight, at GNC. Music by Open Band led by the trio of Laurie Chastain, Laurie Edelman, and Rebecca King.

Friday, November 30
Alan Winston, who calls English country (and historical dance from many eras) in addition to ceidhli, will head the bill at the fifth Friday dance in Palo Alto at MT, with music by Nonesuch Country Dance Players (Ruth Anne Fraley, Susan and Stanley Kramer, Mark Daly and Paul Kostka) .
